1999
- Adam Hodgkin, a philosophy editor at Oxford University Press, founds Xrefer as a free site of ready reference information to be supported by advertising.
2000
- The London Xrefer office is established at the MacMillan House, Paddington Station.
2002
- Béla Hatvany, founder of Computer Library Services (CLSI) and Silverplatter, invests in Xrefer and funds the redeployment of the platform as an online reference database product for libraries.
- U.S. Xrefer office is established in Boston, MA.
- The National Library of Scotland selects Xrefer to provide online reference to all country institutions in December.
2003
- The free "Xrefer showcase" site is discontinued in June. 134 titles are available on the platform.
- The National Library Board of Singapore selects Xrefer to provide online reference to all country institutions in July.
- John Dove, who had worked for Béla as President of Silverplatter in the mid-90s, becomes CEO of Xrefer in November.
2004
- Jill Rosa joins Xrefer as Director of Finance and Operations.
2005
- Librarian Admin is released with a customizable Xreferplus, allowing for custom links.
- U.S. Xrefer office expands to accommodate growth.
2006
- Xrefer exceeds 200 general reference titles.
2007
- The name Xrefer is changed to Credo Reference in June to reflect the company's objective of providing credible, trustworthy content.
- The company moves its England office from London to Oxford in June.
- Key Professionals, Erin McKean of Oxford University Press and Anthony Watkinson of University College London, join Credo Reference's Corporate Advisory Board in October.
2008
- The state of Mississippi chooses Credo Reference as a MAGNOLIA statewide resource in January.
- The National Library of China selects Credo Reference to provide online reference to all country institutions in January.
- The new Credo Reference site is made available for live users in May. New features such as title and book browsing, the concept map, advanced search capabilities, and email, print, save and share capabilities are made available on the new user interface.
- 3 million entries from 300+ high-quality reference titles and 60 publishers are available on the new platform.
- Mike Sweet assumes the CEO role at Credo Reference.
- Credo Reference receives perfect four-star ratings in Library Journal's E-Reference Ratings feature in the November 15, 2008 issue.
- The Credo Blog is launched in December.
2009
- Credo Topic Pages become an offering on the Credo Reference platform as a way for end-users to view a compilation of contextual information on a given topic in a single page.
- Credo Reference is included in Library Journal's "Best Reference 2008" feature in its April 15, 2009 issue.
- 150+ Credo titles are found in Choice's list of 'must-have' titles for U.S. colleges and universities (Resources for College Libraries) in September.
2010
- John Cox, a prestigious leader in the publishing and library worlds, joins Credo Reference's corporate Advisory Board in January.
- Credo Reference and EasyBib announce a partnership to simplify the student's research process in March.
- Credo Reference launches Publisher Collections in April and offers perpetual purchase for the first time.
- The Consorcio de Bibliotecas Metropolitanas selects Credo Reference to provide online reference to all institutions in Puerto Rico in June.
- Credo General Reference Premium expands to include over 500 titles in August.
- Credo Reference relocates their Boston office in December, in order to accommodate continued growth and success.
2011
- Carol Helton assumes the role of Vice President of Worldwide Sales of Credo Reference in January.
- The National Library of Malaysia selects Credo Reference to provide online reference to all country institutions in January.
- 38 Publisher Collections from 11 key reference publishers become available on Credo Reference.
- In January, Credo Reference becomes the first sponsor of Voices for the Library, a group promoting the value of both the public library service and the professionals who work in them.
- Credo Reference announces the launch of Libraries Thriving, a space dedicated to communicating the value of libraries and their ability to impact the learning moment, in March.
- Credo Reference launches 8 Subject Collections in April.
- Credo Reference introduces its Libraries Thriving Advisory Board in August.
- Library Journal names Credo Reference "Best Overall" in the 15 November 2012 Reference Supplement.
